Physics 334 Petition

Descripton of Physics 334 / 335 requirement

As Stated on the website (link just above):
"Students who feel that they have done work in an instructional laboratory elsewhere at the level of Physics 334, may appeal to the Experimental Requirement Committee to be excused from a portion of Physics 334. (The Experimental Requirement Committee consists of the Department Chair, the Department Executive Officer, the Physics 334 instructors, and the faculty member assigned to the oversight of Physics 335.) To be excused, a student must show documentary evidence (e.g., lab reports) of very good quality work done at the graduate level."

I feel that I have done work in an instructional laborabory at Cornell University which was at a level of Physics 334. This was a semester long course that was taught to both undergraduate and graduate students simultaneously. I took the class my Spring semester as a senior at Cornell. I completed three experiments on my own. This involved setting up the experiment, taking data, analyzing the data, and writing formal lab reports (see below).

I have also taken a semester course in Experimental Optics as a Junior at Cornell. This class involved six different experiments. I wrote formal lab reports from each of the experiments (see below).

As a member of Clem Pryke's research group I will be working on two experiments, BICEP2 and SPUD, which aim to measure the gravitational wave background from the big bang through the B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background. In this position I will be involved extensively in hardware work since the Chicago group is responsible for the cryostat system for the SPUD telescope. Thus I will perform a large amount of hands-on laboratory work during my PhD at the University of Chicago.

Thus given the two lab classes that I have taken at Cornell University, and my future plans in Cosmology, I am petitioning to be excused from Physics 334. Please consider my request.
